Proper Basketball Shooting Skills Technique

Stance and Balance

When shooting the basketball, your feet should be in a comfortable position and approximately shoulder-width apart. The foot positioning is similar to the way you would hold a volleyball so that your legs are extended with weight supported by both feet. This will allow you to maintain balance and ensure you’re able to handle the ball with ease.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your toes facing towards the basket. Your shooting foot should be slightly ahead of the non-shooting foot in a comfortable position.

Point your toes in the general direction of the basket, but not directly at it. We prefer an open stance, but if the closed (squared) stance is more comfortable for you, go ahead and use it. When you have an open stance, your feet point to one side of the basket. A right-handed shooter, for example, will position his or her feet just to the left of the rim for a more natural position and shooting motion.

Shot Pocket

When catching the basketball, you will want to position your body just right and in the right spot to get a good shot off. Your positioning should be very similar each time so that you are ready to shoot at the first opportunity. It is also important to grip the ball properly and be ready to shoot at any time.

Grab hold of the ball

In order to shoot a basketball well, you need to know how to stand, maintain control of the ball and aim your shot. Step one is taking your stance. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart with your toes pointed outward and your heels in line with your knees.

Your arms should extend straight above your head, which will help stabilize you during shooting. Step two is holding the ball tightly in the palm of your dominant hand. This will ensure a steady release of the shot when it comes time.

When dribbling or shooting, the ball should sit on your finger pads.

Place the air hole between your index and middle fingers. Your fingertip pads should be parallel to the ball’s long seams. Allow enough space between the ball and your palm to insert a pencil. Make sure your fingers are spread wide enough apart so that you can comfortably balance the ball in one hand.

Balance Hand

Always shoot from the free-throwing position unless you are in a game situation. Your shot should be on target and delivered in a quick but smooth motion to allow the ball to bounce softly off the rim easily. The non-shooting hand should always come off first and deliver the ball with driven wrist action to avoid hooking or deking.

Focus on your target

Closing-your-eyes strategy is another good way to help keep your focus on the shooting target. Closing your eyes can prevent outside distractions from interfering with your shooting. This is great for getting a feel for how the ball flies through the air and helps you anticipate where it will land after being shot at the net.

Playing basketball requires a large amount of quick reaction and agile movement. While it may seem as if you are simply throwing the ball up and then catching it, there is a lot that goes on to make the play happen.

When shooting a basketball, keep your elbow pressed against the rim of your shot pocket. Reach up with your arm and support it by resting on the side of your hips. Your core, leg, and shoulder energy should be fully engaged as you extend in a straight line through your elbow, wrist, and shoulder. It is preferable for the ball to stay directly over the shooting pocket.

Importance Of Being A Great Shooter

Being able to shoot a basketball increases your team’s chances of winning a game. This is because making baskets is how you score points in a basketball game. As a result, the better your shooter, the better your chances of scoring points and helping your team win the game.

The ability to shoot well is an important part of the game. If you want to play for a high level of competition, improving your shooting is a must. This will increase your chances of making baskets and gaining more playing time.
